The cute days of the VW New Beetle are history - the New one now called only Beetle and is changing its essence: From the crawling animal with vase of flowers to a fancy sport coupe. Now simply no conceptual comparison with the beloved good ol’ VW Beetle, no matter how you look at it. The legacy of the cult car air-cooled VW Beetle is not there anymore, the second generation “modern” Beetle inherit nothing but the name. It is based on the current Golf, has a water-cooled front engine and is not intended to be a folk car (Volkswagen).
Beetle II is flatter and wider than its predecessor. Sportier and more masculine than before. Inside, there is a cockpit with painted black or optional carbon-fake plastic coverings, which stands almost vertically in the room. In comparison with the New Beetle, the windshield of the new VW Beetle is sitting closer to the driver, the round tachometer and small analog clock can be read perfectly. The chunky door pockets have been replaced with wide rubber bands to hold even water bottles. Premium audio option (co-op with Panasonic) with eight speakers and a sub woofer in the boot is available to choose.
Like the GTI, the 2.0 TSI has a turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It produces 200 hp and 280 Nm, and sprints from zero to 100 kmh in 7.5 seconds. Also like the GTI, there is a six-speed DSG direct shift gearbox. This twin-clutch transmission shifts swiftly and smoothly but manual changes have to be done with the gear lever as there are no steering wheel-mounted paddles, makes it a bit less fun to shift.
